Data report · Victoria

Victoria's most underserved suburbs for electrical wholesalers

Where is electrical-work demand growing faster than wholesaler branch access? We scored every populated Victoria postcode area (474 of them) against 1,448 published branch locations using a per-capita catchment model. These are the top 5. The full Top 20 is available as a one-off report.

Highest demand-to-access gap

"Underserved" is a per-capita claim: branch access relative to the people and growth a branch would serve: a growth corridor can have a branch nearby and still be underserved. Access is shown against the state median.

/ METHODOLOGY

How "underserved" is measured

1. Branch supply: 2SFCA

Branch access uses the Luo–Wang two-step floating catchment area method (the standard in health-service accessibility research): every published branch's capacity is shared across the population it can reach within 30 km (Gaussian distance decay), then each postcode area sums the distance-weighted capacity it can reach. Cross-border branches count, so border towns aren't falsely flagged.

2. Demand proxies: open data

Demand momentum blends percentile ranks of population-scaled dwelling approvals (ABS), solar installations over the last 12 months (Clean Energy Regulator) and EV registrations: the same open, commercially licensed signals behind our coverage intelligence. These are proxy signals of electrical-work activity, not sales data or any authority's endorsement.

3. Composite score

Demand^0.4 × supply-gap^0.4 × population^0.2, combined geometrically so population alone can't manufacture a rank, then scored 0–100 against the state distribution. Postcode areas under 1,000 residents are suppressed for reliability.

Limitations

Distances are straight-line, capacity treats every branch as one unit (no floor-space or fleet weighting), and demand is proxied, not observed. Treat the ranking as a demand-discovery input to blend with your own cost-to-serve and site criteria, not a "build here" guarantee.
